Leominster - Edward F. Arnold, Jr., age 92, of Leominster, MA died August 3, at Leominster Hospital, after a brief illness. Born in Tarentum, PA on February 26, 1925, he was the son of Edward F. Arnold, Sr., and Leona Arnold (Barbiaux). He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Joan Arnold, son Brian Arnold, and sister Mardelle Arnold. He is survived by his daughter Natalie Piermarini and son-in-law Richard of Leominster, sister Charlotte Massung of Ellwood City, PA, four nieces and two nephews.
Edward was a member of the Naval Mine Warfare Association and also the VFW Post 1822 in Plymouth, MA. He was a 1951 graduate of Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA, from which he earned a Bachelor's of Education degree. He began his teaching career in Tarentum and Freeport, PA public school systems, followed by the University of Liggett School (Formerly Grosse Pointe University School,) in Grosse Pointe, MI. In 1965, he earned a Master's degree in School Administration from Michigan State University, which enabled him to serve as a school principal at the Newbury Elementary School in Newbury, VT. After retiring, Mr. Arnold and his wife owned and operated a small motel in Plymouth, MA for 24 years before relocating to Leominster.
In 2000, Mr. Arnold was awarded a certificate of appreciation from the French Consul General for his participation in the 1944 Liberation of France. A proud veteran of the Normandy Invasion and World War II, Mr. Arnold was interviewed on television in 2004, by the History Channel. He was also interviewed in 2014 by the Sentinel & Enterprise of Fitchburg, MA for an article on the 70th anniversary of D-Day, and in June 2017 by WPKZ radio of Fitchburg, MA.
Ed was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots.
Mr. Arnold's Funeral Service will be celebrated on Monday, August 7, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. in Wright-Roy Funeral Home, Inc., 109 West Street, Leominster. Calling hours will be held Monday, August 7th, from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial in Massachusestts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Winchendon, MA will take place at a later date.
