Online Obituaries Irene C. (Barbour) Smith passed away peacefully at the Highland’s Nursing Home on Sunday morning, April 15, 2012. She was born on September 30, 1918; in Worcester, MA was the daughter of Peter and Kathryn (Palonius) Barbour. She graduated from Commerce High School in Worcester, Class of 1936. She married Wallace Smith on December 31, 1955. Irene, with her husband Wally, was a long term resident of Legate Hill, in Sterling, MA operating a dairy farm for many years. As the youngest of 11 children, she surrounded herself with her sisters and brothers many nieces and nephews. After her husband’s death, she was part of the trio who included her niece and husband Jeanne and Harold Copp and spent many hours playing cards with friends, and family including Georgie, Merilee, Rich, and Aurice. Having no children of her own, she loved “baby” sitting for the children of Legate Hill, especially Greg and Scott and was close with her many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Irene was an avid tennis player and ice skater in her younger days and with Wally, followed American Legion Baseball traveling with a circuit of friends from NE. She was a huge Red Sox fan. Irene worked as a switchboard operator at St. Vincent Hospital and at Ware-Pratt, a gentleman’s clothing store in Worcester where she retired from in 1983 and often shared fond memories of both jobs. Over the last few years she spent a lot of time recollecting her happy life and sharing stories with the Highland’s staff. She was particularly close with her two grandnieces, Nancy Landry and Doreen Thomas and their families. She was a volunteer at St. Richard’s of Chichester Parish in Sterling. She was predeceased by her husband Wallace Smith who died July 8, 1998.
Funeral Information
The funeral will be held from the Wright-Roy Funeral Home 109 West St in Leominster, on Thursday April 19, 2012 with a funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. in St. Richard’s of Chichester Church 4 Bridge St. Sterling. Calling hours will be held Thursday morning from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home.
