Leominster - With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of B. Mark Swaine, on October 8, 2024, in Leominster, MA following a courageous battle with cancer.Mark was the son of Helen (Hayes) and Carrol Swaine, born on December 9, 1948, in Leominster. He graduated from Leominster High School and earned an Associate Degree from Mount Wachusett Community College. Mark grew to become a father, a police officer, a sailor, a grandfather, a great-grandfather, and a friend to many throughout his years.
Mark married the love of his life, Carol Ann (Lemieux), in 1968. They shared 45 years of marriage before Carol’s passing in 2013. Together, Mark and Carol discovered a love of sailing. Mark was a member of the Monomoy Yacht Club in Chatham, MA, as well as the Coastal Harbors Yacht Club and The Twenty Hundred Club, in Newport, RI. Mark was extremely proud of their sailboat the “Hannah B Swan” and labored many spring months to perfect her 7 layers of varnish and update her technology and gear.
Mark became a Patrolman in the Leominster Police Department in 1971 and retired as a Lieutenant in 2007 after 36 years of service including a year as interim Chief of Police in 1988 and serving alongside his son, Matthew, for 9 years. Additionally, Mark joined the Coast Guard in 1986 as a Boatswain mate at Station Chatham and retired in 2008 as a Senior Chief from Station Woods Hole. Serving in the US Coast Guard amplified Mark’s love of boating and his sense of adventure where he could blend his law enforcement background with his seamanship. He worked with the Secret Service to protect vacationing presidents on Martha’s Vineyard, as well as actively serving in NY for Homeland Security providing protection for the harbors of New York and New Jersey post-9/11. Mark also mentored many young recruits during his time in the USCG as a Senior Chief.
Mark is survived by his five children, Christina Rocheleau and her husband, Richard, of Leominster, Heather Swaine and her fiancee, Wayne Rugg, of Westminster, Mark Swaine of Fitchburg, Matthew Swaine of Westminster, and Laurissa Simms and her husband, Christopher, of Leominster. Mark also leaves behind 10 grandchildren: Hilary Alden, Alyssa Buono, Rebecca Davis, Mallary Rocheleau, Diana Rooney, C.Conner Swaine, Justin Swaine, Nora Swaine, Domenic Swaine, Lotus Simms, and 7 great-grandchildren. Mark was predeceased by his wife, Carol Swaine, his sister, Frances Gray, and his granddaughter, Kyla Greska.
The family will receive visitors on Thursday, October 17 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm in Wright-Roy Funeral Home, Inc. 109 West Street, Leominster. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, October 18, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Leo's Church, 128 Main Street, Leominster. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Leominster.
