He is predeceased by his brother, Father John Benson, of the University of Notre Dame.
Jeff was born on December 21, 1947 at Leominster Hospital to Russell and Katherine Wironen. Upon graduating from Leominster High School, Jeff served in the United States Army. After receiving an Honorable Discharge, Jeff earned his Associates Degree from Mount Wachusett Community College before attending Salem State College and Bentley College, where he earned a Certification in Management and Salesmanship in 1975.
Over the course of his professional career, Jeff worked at Carnation Company as a Key Account Sales Representative, as a Unit Manager at Thomas J. Lipton Company, as a Vocational Instructor at Dr. Franklin Perkins School, as a Special Education Counselor and Tutor in the Leominster Public Schools, and as a Rehabilitation Coordinator at Community Health Link. Jeff earned the State Employee of the Year Award in 1994 while serving as a Vocational Instructor at the Perkins School and again in 1996 while serving as a Vocational Education Provider for the Leominster Public Schools.
Over the course of his life, Jeff served the community in a number of roles to include the President of the St. Leo’s School Association, a Team Coordinator for the Special Olympics, the Gardner Chamber of Commerce, the Leominster Chamber of Commerce, and on the Board of Directors for the Leominster National Little League.
Jeff was most affectionately known in the community as “Coach” and as “Grandpa” at home. He had a passion for sports and loved coaching. Over the course of his career, Jeff coached basketball at Fitchburg State College, Leominster High School, St. Bernard’s High School and Montachusett Technical High School. Jeff also served as an Assistant Football Coach at Leominster High School and St. Bernard’s High School before concluding his coaching career as a baseball coach at Leominster Babe Ruth. Jeff’s ability to reach his players and teach fundamentals was second to none.
The only thing Jeff loved more than coaching and Notre Dame Football was being a grandpa to Connor, Alyssa, Nolan, Maggie, Montana, Harlow, Brody, MacKenzie, Boston, Cash and Mia. He loved watching his grandchildren on the field and spending time with them off the field, most often providing encouragement and support. While his grandchildren were spread across the country, he and Nana always found a way to get there to see them play.
Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Wright-Roy Funeral Home, Inc., 109 West St., Leominster, is directing arrangements.
