Fitchburg - Mary J. (Cavanagh) Stanton, 79, died Thursday night in Leominster Hospital after an illness.
She leaves a son, Daniel Cavanagh and his fiance', Sherri Rizzelli of Leominster; a daughter Julia Gionet and her husband Mark of Fitchburg; four grandchildren, Lindsey and Leah Cavanagh and Caleb and Elliott Gionet.
Mary also leaves a brother Michael Cavanagh of Leominster; sisters, Ellen Aubuchon and her husband Ernest of Lunenburg; Clare Breen and her husband Jeremiah of Fitchburg; several nieces and nephews as well as grandnieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister-in-law, Elfriede Cavanagh and a nephew Joseph Aubuchon.
She was born in Leominster, daughter of Martin and Katherine Cavanagh. She graduated from Lancaster High School, attended Stevens Business School and later worked for Colonial Press in Clinton. She also worked for Digital Equipment Corporation. In her eyes, the most rewarding career was raising her children, but also being godmother and an influence to many of the children around her.
She played and exceled at many sports throughout her school years, including softball and basketball often making all-star teams. She also was a swim instructor. Had a love of animals and often spoke of her childhood dogs, horses and cats.
She was able to enjoy her family and quality of life residing with her daughter for many of her recent years. She leaves her beloved cat Minnie who provided her comfort and joy. She was able to share many memories, enjoying days at the beach, coloring and painting and using photo filters with her grandsons. Mary touched so many people in so many ways and she will be missed, loved and remembered by many.
Her funeral will be held Wednesday, January 26, 2022, from Wright-Roy Funeral Home, Inc., 109 West St., Leominster, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Lake Church, 1400 Main St., Leominster. Burial will follow in St. Leo's Cemetery, Leominster. Calling hours are 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 25th and prior to the funeral on Wednesday, January 26th, from 9:15 - 10:15 a.m. in the funeral home.
