Virginia Castelli Obituary

Fitchburg - Virginia V. (Piermarini) Castelli passed away peacefully on August 28th at the Caldwell Home In Fitchburg surrounded by her family.  She was born on September 9, 1927, in Leominster, MA to Antonio Piermarini and Mary (Lolli) Piermarini.  She graduated from Leominster High School as a member of the Fortnightly Club, earning high honors each year of high school.  Upon graduation she entered Burbank Hospital School of Nursing under the cadet program, and upon completion, became a registered nurse.  She held the positions of district nurse in Worcester, head charge nurse on the semi-private ward, and then in the Maternity Department at Burbank Hospital for 32 years, retiring in 1982.  She was very active in the Burbank Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association for many years and served on the Association Board as a Director.

She assisted her late husband Alexander L. Castelli, to whom she was married for 65 years, on the family farm they owned in Fitchburg, gardening, raising an assortment of livestock and running a poultry business.   She was a wonderful cook and always baked during the holiday season, making baskets for relatives, friends and co-workers.  She greatly enjoyed reading her favorite magazine, National Geographic.

Upon retirement, she enjoyed her grandchildren and traveled extensively thoughout the United States and Europe, in addition to many resort islands, with her husband  Alexander and her family.  For over 30 years she spent time every year in Italy visiting relatives and touring the country.  She was a member of St. Camillus Church and was also very involved in the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul.

She is survived by her daughter Mariann Castelli Hier and her husband Lawrence Hier, her son Stephen Castelli and his wife Diane Farrell Castelli, two grandsons; Anthony Castelli and Michael Castelli, and her great granddaughter, Olivia, all of Fitchburg, MA.  She is also survived by her brother-in-law Joseph Novelli, and by many nieces and nephews, as well as grandnieces and nephews.

Virginia was predeceased by her husband, Alexander L. Castelli, sisters; Malvina Gamble, Barbara Novelli and brother Richard Piermarini.

A Private service will be held for immediate family members.
