Samuel D'Angona Obituary

Obituary – Samuel L. D’Angona, 97, WWII Veteran

Sterling - Samuel L. D’Angona, 97, went home to be with the Lord on February 2, 2021, while at the Life Care Center of Leominster.

Samuel was predeceased by his wife, Ellie, of 62 years, in 2010. He leaves his children and their spouses: Sharon and Glenn Van Wickle of Yarmouthport, Massachusetts, Jay and Miriam D’Angona of Bradford, New Hampshire, and Paul and Cheryl D’Angona of Sterling, Massachusetts. He also leaves ten dearly loved grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, Samuel served in the Navy during World War II as a Machinist Mate 1st Class aboard the USS Halsey Powell. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries suffered during a kamikaze attack.

He was a welder for many years before studying at Worcester State College and Fitchburg State College to earn a Massachusetts teacher’s certificate. He taught Plant Maintenance at Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School until his retirement.

He moved to Dennis, Massachusetts with his wife and continued his love of gardening. He especially enjoyed giving vegetables away to neighbors and friends at the Dennis Senior Center and his church. He was also a lifelong woodcarver and gave away carved refrigerator magnets to everyone he met until his eyesight failed. His family cherishes all the plaques, figurines, and wood working projects he shared.  His kind heart, gentle spirit, and generous nature will be missed by all.

A memorial service for Samuel will be held Saturday, July 31st at 11:00 AM  at the Cape Cod Covenant Church, 11 Satucket Rd, Brewster, MA 02631.
